You might have been told that you have missed the boat when it comes to starting an online business. That the market has become “oversaturated” with people trying to sell stuff online, and that you would never be able to compete.
Well, I call it’s never too late.
In fact, I would argue that there has never been a better time to start an online business — and here’s why.
1. More and more people are shopping online
Over the last few years online shopping has become increasingly popular — and it will only become more so over the next decade.
Last year more than 76% of Americans chose to shop online.
Yes you read that correctly: more than three quarters of all America consumers shopped online last year — and unbelievably, this is estimated to increase to 90% within the next four years.
This becomes more apparent when we consider that today, those who use the internet to shop online the most (i.e. gen Z and gen Y) arguably have the least disposable income.
But, as they get older, they are only going to have more money — which means more online shopping.
2. Absurd flexibility
I don’t know about you, but I simply hate the thought of having to live my life to someone else’s schedule.
Waking up at the crack of dawn so I can get to work on time, to make them money, while I scrape by on minimum wage… yeah, no thanks.
Wouldn’t you much prefer to wake up when you want to wake up, work when you want to work, and enjoy your free time when it best suits you?
Well, with an online store you can.
When you decide to start a business online, you get the opportunity to design your entire schedule from scratch. You literally decide what days of the week you are going to work, how many hours, and at what times.
Now, I do want to state that this does not mean you simply do not have to work at all — because that would be ridiculous. But it does mean that you can tailor your work schedule perfectly to your lifestyle.
Which actually leads us to our next point quite nicely…
3. Work while you travel
The best thing about having a fully online business is that it can be run from literally anywhere in the world.
Seriously, once you have your online business up and running, you can make money through a variety of different ways without actually having an inventory. Things like dropshipping, selling digital products and services, and affiliate marketing all come to mind.
There is no shortage of opportunities — and you can make use of them all.
Oh, and travel the world while you do it.
4. Make more money
If you think about the traditional working environment, the amount of money you make is ultimately dictated by how much you work. In short, the more hours you work, the more money you earn.
It seems like a pretty solid system — until you realise that there are only so many hours in a week…
Which is why starting an online business makes so much sense.
If you start an online business, your income becomes dictated by how much you do during the hours you work, rather than just the number of hours you work.
This means that if you spend your time wisely, you can reduce the amount of hours you need to work on a daily basis. It is also important to remember that online businesses literally never close — so as long as your business is well set up, it has the capacity to make money 24/7.
Not bad, am I right?
5. It is ridiculously easy
Once upon a time starting an online business required a lot of specialist IT skills that not many people had — but not any more.
In fact, starting an online business from scratch has never been easier.
Over the last few years we have seen some amazing eCommerce platforms like Shopify and BigCommerce enter the market. These guys are types of websites that set up your online business for you.
Talk about convenience
Two of the most popular ecommerce platforms at the moment are Big commerce and Shopify — but how can you choose?
Well, when it comes to big commerce vs shopify, there are some key differences that need to be mentioned.
Firstly, Shopify is super simple. This makes it the perfect option if you have limited IT skills, or simply want to get your online business up and running as quickly as possible.
On the other hand, BigCommerce is more flexible. This means that if you plan to sell a suite of different products and services, it might be the better choice.
But, whatever option you take, I can guarantee you won’t be disappointed.
The Key Point
Anyone who tells you that the time for starting an online business is gone obviously does not know what they are talking about.
More people are shopping online than ever before. And when you combine that with the fact that an online business will offer you the flexibility and earning potential that most people only dream of, well, you have a recipe for success.
Oh, and did I mention that it has literally never been easier to start a business online?
So why not start one?
