About a year or so ago, Google Analytics began giving a more detailed breakdown on which social networks are driving traffic to your site. Other tools (and APIs) allow you to add buttons to your site to encourage social sharing from any of the major social networks. And to see how a page has performed socially, you can go to that web page you’ve created sharing buttons on and see what the social sharing stats are for each platform for that particular page. In addition, SharedCount now has a really intuitive user interface that allows you to simply input a URL and get back the social shares for that Web page.
Our tool is a slight modification to the SharedCount tool. Instead of just seeing a current snapshot of social shares for a particular URL, our tool allows us to track social shares for that URL over time. We input a URL, make sure our time zone is set correctly and then the tool begins returning social share data for five major social networks (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google+ and Pinterest). The tool checks the shares for that page and logs each network’s response every 30 minutes.
Why would you need a tool like this? This tool is most beneficial when you’re tracking user response to one piece of content. Could this tool be modified to track multiple pages? Yes! And in the future, it will be. But back to that one piece of content you’d like to track– content that stands out from all your other site content, a tool you’ve created, a really useful blog post, an infographic or a content centerpiece–a page that is shareable on major social networks.
Why would you go through the trouble of tracking Social Analytics of a URL over time? Business intelligence, data collection, identifying social sharing frequency and social sharing peaks, learning what content performs better in your industry, are just a few benefits to be realized by tracking social over time.
